DEVILS 13-4 vs. Edmonton Oilers
November 19, 1983
In just their second season in New Jersey, the former Colorado Rockies were blasted by the Oilers. Three Oilers scored hat tricks in this dismantling of the Devils defense, including The Great One, Wayne Gretzky. After the game, Gretzky, who totaled eight points (three goals, five assists), called the Devils a “Mickey Mouse organization” and said the result “wasn’t even funny.” He later apologized. Edmonton’s Jari Kurri added a whopping five goals. The loss dropped the Devils to 2-18 on the season and the team fired coach Billy MacMillan the next day. The Devils tied the nine-goal deficit two more times in the 1980s, with both losses coming to the rival Rangers.
