NO BARK, NO BITE
Saquon sits out practice
ALLEN PARK, Mich. — Saquon Barkley mostly stood and watched, resting his strained left hamstring as the Giants practiced against the Detroit Lions.
"He's day to day," Giants coach Pat Shurmur said Tuesday.
Barkley, a rookie running back drafted No. 2 overall, did some drills very slowly before going to the sideline to work on strength and conditioning. The former Penn State star was in uniform — minus shoulder pads — while his teammates went through the first of three practices with the Lions.
On Monday, the No. 2 overall draft pick caught a swing pass out of the backfield from fellow rookie Kyle Lauletta. Barkley appeared to tweak the hamstring overextending for the catch.
Barkley seemed to be favoring his left leg as he walked back up the field. He put his hands on his knees and then went to the turf and lay on his back while the head trainer examined him. An ice pack was put on his leg.
The Giants are in Detroit for a three-day joint workout with the Lions before their Friday preseason game.
It's uncertain how much work Barkley will get or whether he will play in the preseason game on Friday night.
"Player safety is right on the front burner for all of us all the time," Shurmur said. "If he's able to go, he'll play. If he's not, then he won't be out there."
Jonathan Stewart, who spent the first 10 years of his career with the Carolina Panthers, filled in for Barkley during some snaps with the firststring offense.
REST FOR CONNOR
Giants LB Connor Barwin, who has an undisclosed injury, did not practice and said the team is letting him rest.
