5 ways $92M could be put to better use than parade

- BY STORM GIFFORD

With President Trump's military parade budget careening out of control at more than seven times the original cost, and who knows what such a march may cost next year, here are five ways $92 million could be put to better use.

You could buy 1,415,602 American Red Cross 72Hour Supply Buckets. Each bucket contains ration packets with enough food to feed a family of four for three days. With that money you could feed Puerto Rico's hurricane-ravaged population of 3.5 million citizens for about a week. You could buy more than 1 billion 16.9-ounce bottles of Pureau water for Flint, Mich., residents. That comes out to about 10,000 bottles of water for each of the city's 103,000 inhabitants.

The Fill A Backpack program provides free backpacks loaded with grade-appropriate supplies for schoolkids. With the average cost of $107.76 of supplies needed by each kid, that would fill 853,749 backpacks — furnishing every child in Oklahoma with free supplies for an entire school year.

With all childhood vaccines costing $1,170 per kid, on average, $92 million would immunize 78,632 children from potentially fatal diseases like whooping cough, diphtheria, polio and measles.

For $92 million, you could purchase 368 million oak tree seedlings. That's 317,241 acres' worth of new trees, which is more than 1.5 times the size of New York City.
