Mid-August has historically been a tough time if you’re an American icon, with the week of Aug. 13-19 marking the deaths of Yankees superstars Mickey Mantle (1995) and Babe Ruth (1948), along with music giants Elvis Presley in 1977 and Aretha Franklin last week.

As the Daily News counts down to its 100th birthday next year, New York’s hometown paper — the first daily tabloid in the U.S. when it was founded on June 26, 1919— is giving our loyal readers a look into our famed archives to help celebrate the centennial.

Check in every week to see how The News covered the top stories of the day.
