Hit-run susp cuffed later at scene
A hit-and-run driver who killed a Bronx dad in a grisly wreck near Woodlawn Cemetery returned to the scene of the crash a few hours later, cops said.
Collin Hedley, 24, was driving with a revoked license at about 8:20 a.m. when he lost control of a 2016 BMW on Jerome Ave. near E. 233rd St. He sideswiped a Honda SUV, smashed head-on into a Toyota sedan, then spun into another Honda SUV and ran off, cops said.
The Toyota’s driver, Ramon Monteagudo, 59, of Jerome Park, was mortally hurt in the wreck. He died at Montefiore Medical Center.
Hedley returned later Sunday night to the crash scene, and admitted he had a bag with weed and pills, which police found inside the mangled BMW, cops said. Police arrested him shortly after 11 p.m.
Monteagudo’s mom, Francisca Monteagudo, said he was supposed to be on his way to the Upper West Side, where he works as a building super. Monteagudo, who had a son, moved in with his mother after separating from his wife, she said.
“He was a great son,” the devastated mother said. “He’s been living with me since they separated.”
Neighbors were shocked to hear of Monteagudo’s death.
“He was the nicest guy. Never met anyone like him. He was a big guy, but gentle,” said the man’s elderly next-door neighbor, Noel Folan. “He put a battery in my car for me on Friday. I saw him Saturday. I didn’t see him yesterday. I was looking for his car this morning.”
Hedley, of Norwood, is charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident, criminal possession of a controlled substance and unlicensed driving. He awaits arraignment in Bronx Criminal Court.
