Jets D.C. falls ill, could be out Sunday

- BY MANISH MEHTA

The Jets might be without defensive coordinator Kacy Rodgers against the Broncos on Sunday after the coach fell ill.

Rodgers missed practice Friday after missing his regularly scheduled weekly press conference on Thursday.

“He's ill of a nature we can't discuss right now,” Bowles said after practice Friday. “We'll see going forward where he is and go from there. … He's a tough guy. It's a serious thing.”

Bowles was uncertain whether Rodgers would be with the team this weekend.

Rodgers' family told the Daily News that he's under a physician's care, but they're expecting him to be fine. There will be more clarity in the coming days after additional tests.

Bowles and Rodgers have been on the same coaching staffs for three teams (Cowboys, Dolphins and Jets) dating back 13 years.

INJURY NOTES: Cornerback Trumaine Johnson was officially ruled out after suffering a quad injury in practice on Thursday. Bowles said that Johnson's injury isn't considered season-ending “at this time,” but the indication is that he could miss multiple games. “He'll be out this week,” Bowles said. “So, we'll just monitor it after that and see how he's feeling.” … Darryl Roberts and/ or rookie Parry Nickerson will get more playing time based on how veteran Buster Skrine is deployed. Wide receiver Charone Peake (hamstring) and tight end Neal Sterlin g (concussion) were ruled out.

The Jets claimed outside linebacker Tarell Basham off waivers from the Colts and waived defensive lineman Bronson Kaufusi.

Wide receiver ArDarius Stewart was released from the practice squad IR with an injury settlement after suffering a serious foot/ankle injury in practice recently.
