‘O’ starters could play vs. Patriots

- By HOWIE KUSSOY

Ben McAdoo hasn’t revealed yet whether his struggling first-team offense will see snaps in their preseason finale against the Patriots on Thursday, but the Giants coach said the decision about how much, if any, playing time the starters receive will be specific to each individual.

Starters typically don’t play in the fourth preseason game, but the plan could change because of the continued struggles of the offense, which has failed to score a touchdown in two games with Eli Manning on the field, playing behind a broken offensive line.

“We’re gonna look at it on a caseby-case basis,” McAdoo said following Tuesday’s practice. “We’re not just gonna say starters are gonna play 10 plays or 20 plays or nothing like that.”

Though McAdoo recently saw the danger the preseason presents with Tony Romo’s back injury, the rookie coach said any fear of his stars missing regular-season time wouldn’t impact his decision whether they would play Thursday.

“Injuries are an unfortunate part of the game and you have to play the game,” McAdoo said. “You need 11 out there and you’ve got to find them somewhere.” The Giants cut 12 players Tuesday to reduce the roster to the mandatory limit of 75 players, including safeties Cooper Taylor and Bennett Jackson, and tackle Byron Stingily. Taylor, a 2013 fifth-round pick, played in 16 games with the team, while Jackson, selected in the sixth round in 2014, missed each of the past two seasons after undergoing knee surgery. The Giants also waived eight first-year players, including defensive end Mike Rose, cornerback Joe Powell, offensive lineman Shane McDermott, wide receivers K. J. Maye and Kadron Boone, running back Marshaun Coprich and defensive tackles Davon Coleman and Greg Milhouse. Tight end Ryan Malleck (burner) was waived/injured.

The final cuts for the 53-man roster will be made Saturday.

Right guard John Jerry (ankle) returned to practice, where Victor

Cruz was again a full participant. … Linebackers B.J. Goodson (concussion), Jonathan Casillas (ribs) and Jasper Brinkley ( knee) did not practice, along with fullback/tight end Will Johnson (burner) and

Darian Thompson (shoulder).
