Gang Green may catch break with Wilson injury
The schedule makers did the Jets no favors by loading up the early portion of their schedule, but they could catch a break Sunday.
Seahawks Pro Bowl quarterback Russell Wilson has a sprained MCL in his left knee, coach Pete Carroll said on ESPN radio, and there is a possibility Wilson may not play against the Jets at MetLife Stadium, though his status is uncertain this early in the week.
While Carroll said Wilson is doing “exceedingly well,” he also said the Seahawks plan to be “careful” with the Super Bowl-winning, franchise quarterback.
Wilson suffered the injury in the third quarter of the Seahawks’ 37-18 rout of the 49ers. He hasn’t missed a start in his five-year career, and Sunday was the first time he had missed any snaps. If he plays, he would do so with a brace.
The Seahawks have a bye week after the Jets game, so they could use that to give Wilson a full two weeks of rest.
“I think obviously there’s a consideration for that,” Carroll said. “With an extra couple weeks, it would help everybody if he could sit out for a while. They’d all get healed, but we’ll see what happens. We’re going to do the right thing. We’re going to make sure that we’re very careful.”
Through three games, the Jets’ offensive line has allowed just two sacks, keeping quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick upright. It has been one of the most consistent aspects of the up-anddown offense.
“We did some good things up front that were maybe overshadowed by all the turnovers,” Fitzpatrick said, referring to his six interceptions Sunday in a 24-3 loss to the Chiefs.
Left tackle Ryan Clady felt it was another solid performance for the offensive line — Fitzpatrick wasn’t sacked, and he was hit just four times — but there still is room for improvement.
“We got to be able to run the ball better, especially early in games, establish the run,” Clady said of the ground attack that produced 117 yards on 22 attempts against the Chiefs but only 38 yards in the first half. “I think we’ll be better off [if we can do that].”
Linebacker Jordan Jenkins made his debut and fellow rookie Darron Lee was active Sunday, producing six tackles, two for losses, a half-sack and a quarterback hit. Jenkins, who missed the f irst two games with an injured calf, had five tackles.
“They ran around. They did some things,” coach Todd Bowles said. “They made some good plays. They had some things they can learn from, but overall, they played fast.”
