Allen’s art windfall

-

WHAT art bubble? Microsoft billionaire Paul Allen is said to be the seller of a Gerhard Richter painting that is estimated to fetch up to $35 million at auction — tripling his investment. The painting of a jet fighter, titled “Düsenjäger,” will lead off a Phillips sale of 20thcentury and contemporary art in New York on Nov. 16. Allen is the secret seller of the work, according to Bloomberg, and he bought the painting for a mere $11.2 million at a 2007 Christie’s auction, a Richter record at the time. Back in 2014, Allen sold a Rothko painting through Phillips for $56.2 million, which he had acquired for $34.2 million, also in 2007.
