Grenfell Tower toll hits 79
The death toll in the fastmoving fire that gutted a London high-rise has soared to 79 people, police confirmed Monday.
Metropolitan Police Commander Stuart Cundy said the “awful reality” was that it might be impossible to identify all the victims. The total number of dead is expected to rise as searches continue.
Some families lost more than one member, Cundy said, according to the Telegraph.
“On Saturday I went in myself and went to the top floor,” he said. “And it is incredibly hard to describe the devastation in some parts of that building.”
Meanwhile, the government announced that those displaced by the massive blaze will be given the equivalent of at least $7,000 from an emergency fund.
