2nd Paterson mayor jailed
A tearful former mayor of Paterson, NJ, apologized in a Jersey City court Tuesday and said he was embarrassed before being sentenced to five years in prison for directing city employees to do work at a warehouse leased by his daughter and nephew.
Democrat José “Joey” Torres was elected mayor in 2002 on a reform platform after incumbent Republican Martin Barnes was indicted in a kickback scheme.
Barnes later served time in prison.
Superior Court Judge Sheila Venable also ordered Torres, who pleaded guilty in September to conspiracy, to forfeit future public employment and pay back $10,000.
