2nd Pater­son mayor jailed

A tear­ful for­mer mayor of Pater­son, NJ, apol­o­gized in a Jer­sey City court Tues­day and said he was em­bar­rassed be­fore be­ing sen­tenced to five years in prison for di­rect­ing city em­ploy­ees to do work at a ware­house leased by his daugh­ter and nephew.

Demo­crat José “Joey” Tor­res was elected mayor in 2002 on a re­form plat­form af­ter in­cum­bent Repub­li­can Martin Barnes was in­dicted in a kick­back scheme.

Barnes later served time in prison.

Su­pe­rior Court Judge Sheila Ven­able also or­dered Tor­res, who pleaded guilty in Septem­ber to con­spir­acy, to for­feit fu­ture pub­lic em­ploy­ment and pay back $10,000.
