Truth about hate crimes

“Hate Soars” a head­line de­clared, over a story show­ing bias crimes in the na­tion rose 5 per­cent in 2016. Nat­u­rally, this was at­trib­uted to Pres­i­dent Trump’s tough talk about Is­lamic ter­ror­ism and il­le­gal im­mi­grants, with one au­thor declar­ing that “hate speech that comes from the top be­comes hate crimes at the bot­tom.” It’s a good the­ory — ex­cept for the facts. First, more than half of the 1,538 hate crimes in­volv­ing re­li­gion tar­geted Jews, while less than 25 per­cent tar­geted Mus­lims.

Sec­ond, mur­der rose faster than hate crimes. FBI stats show 17,250 peo­ple were re­ported killed in the US in 2016, an in­crease of 8.6 per­cent over 2015.

Now, if there was only some way to blame mur­der on Trump . . .
