Lo­cal brass band to play 20th-an­niver­sary con­cert

The Ch­e­sa­peake Sil­ver Cor­net Brass Band will cel­e­brate 20 years of mu­sic with a spe­cial an­niver­sary con­cert at the First Pres­by­te­rian Church on Satur­day.

The free con­cert is open to the public and will be­gin at 7 p.m. at the church lo­cated at 292 W. Main St., next to the Newark Coun­try Club.

The 35-piece, Wilm­ing­ton/ Newark-based band was formed in 1996 and is the only non-mil­i­tary, all-brass plus per­cus­sion con­cert band in the state. It has grown over the years into a blend of lo­cal res­i­dents, pro­fes­sional mu­si­cians from neigh­bor­ing states and stu­dents from the Univer­sity of Delaware and lo­cal high schools. Rus­sell Mur­ray, pro­fes­sor and chair of UD’s De­part­ment of Mu- sic, is the band’s di­rec­tor and con­duc­tor.

Dur­ing Satur­day’s con­cert, the band will play se­lected au­di­ence fa­vorites from past per­for­mances in­clud­ing “March from Aida,” “The Black Horse Troop” march, “Fin­lan­dia,” “Car­a­van,” “Flo­ral Dance,” “Bu­gler’s Hol­i­day” and many more.
