Dukarts at McDonald’s – 1995
This week’s Out of the attic item is a 1995 photo of Len, Les and Alan Dukart posing in front of the playground at the Main Street McDonald’s.
The photo ran with a Newark Post article commemorating the restaurant’s 35th anniversary and noting the opening of the new play area, then the largest of any McDonald’s playground.
Len Dukart opened the restaurant in 1960, and it was the first McDonald’s in Delaware. It was rebuilt in 1976 when an explosion and fire destroyed the original building.
The restaurant was rebuilt again in 2014. The latest renovation added more modern features, but the play area was eliminated.
Out of the Attic is produced in partnership with the Newark Historical Society. The Newark History Museum, located in the old train station under the South College Avenue overpass, is open Sundays from 2 to 5 p.m. For more info, call 302-234-4145 or visit www.newarkdehistoricalsociety.org
