Newark man killed in crash
Alcohol believed to be factor in collision
A 24-year-old Newark man was killed early Saturday morning in a car crash east of the city.
Michael A. Burns was driving his 2015 Mazda 6 west on East Chestnut Hill Road “at an apparent high rate of speed,” said Master Cpl. Jeffrey Hale, a spokesman for Delaware State Police.
At approximately 12:45 a.m., Burns’ Mazda collided with a 2005 Ford Ex- plorer turning from eastbound Chestnut Hill Road onto Old Newark Road, Hale said. The Mazda then jumped a curb and crashed into a fence.
Burns, who was not wearing a seatbelt, died at the scene. The driver of the Ford, 29-year-old Natasha Sagapolutele of Bear, was taken to Christiana Hospital to be treated for non-lifethreatening injuries.
“Alcohol use and speed on the part of Michael Burns is being considered as a factor in the crash,” Hale said.
