Three teens charged in attempted robbery on Lovett Avenue
Three teens were arrested Sunday after they allegedly tried to rob a University of Delaware student, but ran away when they saw a UD police officer drive by.
The defendants are identified as Sam Votta, 17, of Newark, and Trumye Shackelford, 18, and Ahmar Shackelford, 17, both of Wilmington.
According to Lt. Fred Nelson, a spokesman for the Newark Police Department, the incident occurred at approximately 2:37 a.m. as the victim, 21, was walking on Lovett Avenue.
Nelson said two passengers jumped out of a black older-model sports car and de- manded that the victim empty his pockets. During the confrontation, Nelson said, one of the suspects kept his hand in his pocket, which the victim believed was an attempt to imply he was armed with a weapon.
A UD police officer then turned onto Lovett Avenue and the suspects fled in their vehicle. Nelson said the victim flagged down the UD officer and reported the attempted robbery.
Another UD officer then conducted a traffic stop on a black Chevrolet Camaro on East Delaware Avenue at the intersection of Academy Street and all three suspects were taken into custody.
Nelson explained that both Newark Police and UD Police worked together to make the arrests.
“Essentially, UDPD assisted NPD in our investigation of this incident by stopping the suspect vehicle for us. NPD conducted the investigation into this incident and ultimately obtained arrest warrants for the three suspects,” he said. “Our departments will often work together in locating suspects in crimes that have just occurred by broadcasting suspect descriptions on both department’s police radio channels.”
Nelson said all three men were video arraigned in front of JP Court 11, charged with second-degree attempted robbery and second-degree conspiracy and later released. Votta and Ahmar Shackelford were both issued $700 unsecured bond, while Trumye Shackelford was issued $5,500 unsecured bond.
