This In­de­pen­dence Day, flags flew on the graves of Rev­o­lu­tion­ary War vet­er­ans buried in Head of Chris­tiana Church Ceme­tery. The flags are placed prior to Me­mo­rial Day each year by the Amer­i­can Le­gion.

At least 38 Rev­o­lu­tion­ary War sol­diers are known to be buried in the ceme­tery, lo­cated off Not­ting­ham Road in Ne­wark.

They in­clude: Amos Alexan­der, John Alexan­der, Capt. Wal­ter Alexan­der, David Barr, Richard Ben­nett, Ma­jor James Black, Thomas Bradley, Jacob Casho, Ben­jamin Cowan, Wil­liam Craw­ford, Levi Davis, Sa­muel Davis, John Evans, Ge­orge Gille­spie, Ge­orge Gille­spie (son), John Gille­spy, James Hamil­ton, Thomas Hol­land, Jacob Hous­ton, Wil­liam Howard, James Jones, John Jor­dan, An­drew Kerr, Thomas Kirk­wood, John Leech, Rev. John McCreary, Fred­er­ick Min­gling, John Mitchell, Jacob Moore, John Mur­phy, Lt. Thomas Rankin, Ge­orge Rus­sel, Alexan­der Steele, Allen Steele, Capt. Alexan­der Thomp­son, John Wag­goner, Dr. Ge­orge Wal­lace and John Whann.
