Gas station worker tried to fend off suspect
Police are investigating a Labor Day evening robbery of a gas station near the Interstate 95 ramps.
At 6:27 p.m. Monday, officers responded to the Exxon gas station located at 820 S. College Ave. for a robbery that had just occurred.
The 34-year-old clerk reported that the robber approached him and presented an item for purchase. After the clerk opened the cash register, the suspect came around the sales counter and attempted to remove cash from the register, Newark Police Department spokesman Lt. Fred Nelson reported.
Although the clerk attempted to stop him, the suspect was able to remove an undisclosed amount of cash from the cash register and fled the store.
The victim received some minor scrapes and bruises from his confrontation with the robber, however, he refused medical treatment.
The suspect is described as a Hispanic man about 6 feet tall, weighing 150 pounds, who was driving a minivan. There is no surveillance video available for release at this time.
