Clerk in­jured in rob­bery

Gas sta­tion worker tried to fend off sus­pect

Po­lice are in­ves­ti­gat­ing a La­bor Day evening rob­bery of a gas sta­tion near the In­ter­state 95 ramps.

At 6:27 p.m. Mon­day, of­fi­cers re­sponded to the Exxon gas sta­tion lo­cated at 820 S. Col­lege Ave. for a rob­bery that had just oc­curred.

The 34-year-old clerk re­ported that the rob­ber ap­proached him and pre­sented an item for pur­chase. Af­ter the clerk opened the cash reg­is­ter, the sus­pect came around the sales counter and at­tempted to re­move cash from the reg­is­ter, Ne­wark Po­lice Depart­ment spokesman Lt. Fred Nel­son re­ported.

Although the clerk at­tempted to stop him, the sus­pect was able to re­move an undis­closed amount of cash from the cash reg­is­ter and fled the store.

The vic­tim re­ceived some mi­nor scrapes and bruises from his con­fronta­tion with the rob­ber, how­ever, he re­fused med­i­cal treat­ment.

The sus­pect is de­scribed as a His­panic man about 6 feet tall, weigh­ing 150 pounds, who was driv­ing a mini­van. There is no sur­veil­lance video avail­able for re­lease at this time.
