Newark woman struck, killed crossing Capitol Trail
A Newark woman died as she attempted to cross the westbound lanes of Capitol Trail east of Newark last week.
Police identified the victim as 51-year-old Barbara Fels.
The crash happened at approximately 2:20 a.m. Aug. 31 in the area of Dar win Drive, across from the Wawa, according to Delaware State Police spokesman Master Cpl. Jeffrey Hale.
“She stepped directly into the path of a 2007 Volkswagen Jetta, which was being operated by a 33-year-old Wilmington man,” Hale said. “The operator of the Jetta swerved to the right in an attempt to avoid the collision, however, he was unsuccessful.” Fels died at the scene. Hale said Fels was wearing dark clothing, did not use a marked crosswalk and is believed to have been under the influence of alcohol.
The driver of the car, whose name police did not release, was not injured. The investigation is continuing, but Hale said police do not expect to file charges.
