Retired State Sen. Amick honored with public service award
Citing his dedication to open government, Common Cause Delaware recently honored retired Newark legislator Steve Amick.
“We are honoring Steve for his legislative and community accomplishments that span over two decades,” Jan Konesey, chairperson for Common Cause Delaware, said in a prepared statement. “His commitment and support for Common Cause and our mission for open and accountable government goes back to 1989 when he first joined the organization.”
Common Cause is a nonpartisan group that works to rein in the power of money in politics, increase transparency and accountability in government and provide access to safe and secure voting for every qualified citizen.
“Throughout his service in the legislature, Steve, a Republican, showed his commitment to the Common Cause ideal: that how a government acts is just as important as what it does,” Common Cause Program Director Jennifer Hill said. “He used his positions as chair of the House Rules and Sunset Committees to push for open and accountable government. In the State Senate, he served as minority whip and minority leader and as a member of the powerful Joint Finance Committee.”
Konesey and former Rep. Mike Castle presented the Russell Peterson Public Service Award to Amick during a ceremony last month in Wilmington.
A graduate of Newark High School, Washington College and Dickinson School of Law, Amick served Newark in the state legislature for 22 years – as a member of the state House of Representatives from 1986 to 1994 and as a state senator from 1994 to 2008.
Now in retirement, Amick remains a member of the Newark Morning Rotary Club and most recently led an unsuccessful campaign to rename West Park Place Elementar y School after the filmmaker Ken Burns.
He joins several other Newarkers who have won the Russell Peterson Public Service Award in recent years, including University of Delaware professor emeritus Ralph Begleiter and former state senators Karen Peterson and Liane Sorenson.
