Newark teen dies in crash
Girl, 17, killed in Salem Church Road collision
A 17-year-old girl from Newark died in a crash on Salem Church Road on Tuesday evening, police said.
Caitlin Rouwhorst was driving a 2001 Saturn SL 2 on Cornell Drive, approaching the intersection with Salem Church Road, just before 6:30 p.m., according to Master Cpl. Michael Austin, a spokesman for Delaware State Police.
After stopping at a stop sign, she proceeded through the intersection and directly into the path of a 2011 Dodge Nitro, which was heading north on Salem Church Road, Austin said. The Dodge then struck the driver’s side of the Saturn.
Rouwhorst was taken to Christiana Hospital, where she died.
The 27-year-old driver of the Dodge and Rouwhorst’s 16-year-old male passenger were taken to the hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries. An 8-year-old boy who was a passenger in the Dodge was not hurt.
All occupants were wearing seat belts, and impairment does not appear to be a contributing factor in the crash, Austin said.
