First Fri­day Ride: Tonight, 5:30 p.m., at Ne­wark Shop­ping Cen­ter. A ca­sual com­mu­nity bike ride sponsored by Bike Ne­wark be­gins at the shop­ping cen­ter and trav­els through the city. Af­ter the ride, par­tic­i­pants will meet at Ali Baba for food and drinks. Bike lights are re­quired. Par­tic­i­pants may park for free at the shop­ping cen­ter.

Plan­ning com­mis­sion: Tues­day, 7 p.m., at city hall, 220 S. Main St. The plan­ning com­mis­sion will vote on two projects: a pro­posal to build a three-story build­ing con­tain­ing 12 apart­ments and ad­di­tional re­tail space in the Park N Shop on South Main Street, and a plan to build 11 town­houses on Benny Street.

Art gallery re­cep­tion: Fri­day, Feb. 9, 6 to 8 p.m., at the Ne­wark Arts Al­liance, 276 E. Main St. A re­cep­tion will in­tro­duce NAA’s ex­hibit “Baby, It’s Cold Out­side,” art in any me­dia ex­plor­ing the cold of win­ter. The ex­hibit will be on dis­play through Feb. 23. Free.

Tree and shrub ID: Satur­day, Feb. 10, 10 a.m., at UD’s Fis­cher Green­house, 533 S. Col­lege Ave. Dr. John Frett will lead a walk through the gar­dens and teach par­tic­i­pants how to iden­tify plants year-round us­ing bud, leaf scar and stem char­ac­ter­is­tics.
