First Friday Ride: Tonight, 5:30 p.m., at Newark Shopping Center. A casual community bike ride sponsored by Bike Newark begins at the shopping center and travels through the city. After the ride, participants will meet at Ali Baba for food and drinks. Bike lights are required. Participants may park for free at the shopping center.
Planning commission: Tuesday, 7 p.m., at city hall, 220 S. Main St. The planning commission will vote on two projects: a proposal to build a three-story building containing 12 apartments and additional retail space in the Park N Shop on South Main Street, and a plan to build 11 townhouses on Benny Street.
Art gallery reception: Friday, Feb. 9, 6 to 8 p.m., at the Newark Arts Alliance, 276 E. Main St. A reception will introduce NAA’s exhibit “Baby, It’s Cold Outside,” art in any media exploring the cold of winter. The exhibit will be on display through Feb. 23. Free.
Tree and shrub ID: Saturday, Feb. 10, 10 a.m., at UD’s Fischer Greenhouse, 533 S. College Ave. Dr. John Frett will lead a walk through the gardens and teach participants how to identify plants year-round using bud, leaf scar and stem characteristics. The Art of Dessert: Saturday, Feb. 10, 6:30 to 9 p.m., at the Newark Arts Alliance, 276 E. Main St. The annual Newark Arts Alliance fundraiser offers guests samples of desserts from several Newark restaurants. Tickets are $20 and are available at www. newarkartsalliance.org or at the door.
