Police: Man injured after drivers simultaneously run stop signs

Newark Post - - POLICE BLOTTER - By JOSH SHANNON jshannon@chespub.com

Two drivers simultaneously ran stop signs and collided in the Old Newark neighborhood last week, injuring one of the drivers, police said.

The crash happened at approximately 8 a.m. Jan. 26 at the intersection of Orchard and Winslow roads, according to Sgt. Gerald Bryda, a spokesman for the Newark Police Department.

Adrien Olivier, 87, of Newark, was driving a 2005 Chrysler Town and Country minivan west on Winslow Road, while Hunter Luckow, 20, of Huntington, N.Y., was driving a 2015 Jeep Cherokee north on Orchard Road.

Both drivers went through the intersection without stopping at the stop signs, and Luckow’s Jeep hit the left side of Olivier’s van, Bryda said. A neighbor’s private surveillance camera captured footage of the crash.

Both drivers were cited for failure to stop at a stop sign. Speed was not a factor, Bryda said.

New Castle County paramedics treated Olivier at the scene for injuries to his chest and abdomen, according to paramedic spokesperson Yvonne T. Russell. He was taken to Christiana Hospital in stable condition.

The intersection is one of two in Old Newark where city officials are considering installing a mini traffic circle to help calm traffic.

The project was initiated by a group of residents calling themselves Friends of Newark Neighborhood Streets. The residents said drivers running stop signs is a major issue on Orchard Road, which is a residential street but often used as a shortcut for drivers trying to avoid South College Avenue.

“They just fly past the intersection. No brake lights, like 30 mph,” Linda Laurenceau, who lives at the corner of Orchard and Winslow, said last fall as workers installed a temporary mockup of the proposed traffic circle.

The traffic circle was left in place for two weeks as part of the pilot program. A survey taken afterward showed mixed feedback, with about half of respondents indicating they would like it to become permanent and the other half reporting concerns about it.

City officials have not yet said if they plan to move forward with a permanent installation. The second traffic circle was proposed for one block away at Orchard and Sunset roads.

Last Friday’s crash happened here at the intersection of Winslow and Orchard roads, where neighbors want to install a mini traffic circle to calm traffic.
