Good Neighbor Bean Soup Mix sale set for Saturday
The Newark Area Welfare Committee’s Good Neighbor Day bean soup sale is a local tradition that dates back decades.
That tradition returns Saturday, when dozens of volunteers will fan out across Newark to sell the soup mix to raise money for the venerable nonprofit.
The sale is a signature fundraiser for NAWC, which uses the proceeds to help those in need by providing Christmas food boxes, new shoes and financial assistance for utility bills, rent, prescription medicines and other necessities of life.
“We are a committee of volunteers who work to help Newark residents and neighbors who need a helping hand,” organizer Katie Hughes explained during last year’s event. “Help us be able to help our neighbors.”
Sold for $4 a bag, the soup mix includes 11 kinds of beans, bought in bulk and mixed together by NAWC volunteers.
The soup mix will be available outside Newark Natural Foods, the College Square Acme and the Suburban Plaza Acme from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It also will be sold outside the National 5 and 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
