State Rep. Earl Jaques beat out Lib­er­tar­ian Bill Hinds to earn his sixth term in the state house.

“Ev­ery­one said, ‘Ah, it’s a Lib­er­tar­ian, you got it,’ but I took no­body lightly,” Jaques said Tues­day night.

Jaques, a Demo­crat, de­feated Hinds 85 per­cent to 15 per­cent.

He rep­re­sents Dis­trict 27, which en­com­passes an area south of Ne­wark, stretch­ing from Sun­set Lake Pre­serve to Lums Pond State Park.

Jaques spent some time at all of the polling places in his dis­trict and met his op­po­nent for the first time Tues­day, he said.

He cred­ited his vic­tory to get­ting out and meet­ing the peo­ple, quot­ing the old adage “signs don’t vote, peo­ple do.”

Be­cause he knows the res­i­dents in his dis­trict well, their is­sues were his is­sues, he said.
