NYT partners with Apple
The New York Times said it will feature articles on Apple’s new News app. Similar to Flipboard, News is the replacement for Apple’s recently discontinued Newsstand app. It allows users to load articles from The Times and reformats them for easier reading on mobile devices, NYT said.
The partnership is similar to NYT’s recent pact with Facebook, through which the paper plans to post up to 30 articles a day on the social media site in a bid to draw more digital readership to its content. Apple’s News app, meantime, which could put NYT content on up to 1 billion phones, allows The Times to sell ads on its pages and retain 100 percent of the revenue, Kinsey Wilson, an executive at NYT told NYT Public Editor Margaret Sullivan.
The story choices will be different on Facebook and News, with content representing about 10 percent of The Times’ full offerings, Wilson said.
