NCWV Me­dia buys Mary­land pa­per

West Vir­ginia-based NCWV Me­dia has bought e Repub­li­can, a weekly news­pa­per in Oak­land, Mary­land.

e news­pa­per was founded in 1877 by James Hay­den and has been owned and op­er­ated by ve gen­er­a­tions of the Sin­cell fam­ily, ac­cord­ing to e Ex­po­nent Tele­gram.

“ is has been a di cult de­ci­sion for our fam­ily,” said Don­ald Sin­cell, who has been the pa­per’s ed­i­tor for al­most 40 years. “ ere is no one in the next gen­er­a­tion of our fam­ily who is in­ter­ested in tak­ing over man­age­ment of the busi­ness for the fu­ture, so the tim­ing for such a de­ci­sion seemed right.”

Sin­cell’s younger sis­ter Mary will be the new ed­i­tor and his daugh­ter Rachel will con­tinue to be part of the news sta .

“Brian Jarvis, pres­i­dent of NCWV Me­dia, also comes from a multi­gen­er­a­tion fam­ily in­volved in news­pa­per pub­lish­ing and clearly un­der­stands all of the as­pects of ‘ru­ral liv­ing,’ which was another im­por­tant fac­tor in our de­ci­sion-mak­ing process,” Sin­cell said.

NCWV Me­dia also pub­lishes e Pre­ston News & Jour­nal, e Ex­po­nent Tele­gram daily, as well as e State Jour­nal, e Bridge­port News, e Fair­mont News, e We­ston News, e Blue & Gold News, NCWV Life Mag­a­zine and other pub­li­ca­tions.

Ken­tucky Pa­pers Sold

Ap­palachian News­pa­pers has pur­chased a group of news­pa­pers in east­ern Ken­tucky from Civ­i­tas Me­dia. Ap­palachian’s par­ent com­pany is Alabama-based Lan­caster Man­age­ment.

e pub­li­ca­tions in­clude the Pre­stons­burg (Ken­tucky) Floyd County Times, East Ken­tucky Shop­per, Hazard (Ken­tucky) Her­ald, Shop­per Stop­per and their dig­i­tal plat­forms. Ap­palachian News­pa­pers pub­lishes the Ap­palachian News-Ex­press, Floyd County Chron­i­cle, Mingo Mes­sen­ger and Moun­tain Bar­gain Hunter in the area.

Sun Me­dia group sold

Fam­ily-owned Sun Me­dia Group is be­ing sold to SJ Ac­qui­si­tion, a com­pany con­trolled by RFB Hold­ings, which also owns MaineTo­day Me­dia, Al­liance Press in Brunswick and Courier Pub­li­ca­tions, based in Rock­land, Maine, ac­cord­ing to a news re­lease.

“Af­ter four gen­er­a­tions of fam­ily own­er­ship, sell­ing Sun Me­dia Group was a di cult de­ci­sion for the Costello fam­ily,” said Steve Costello, vice pres­i­dent of ad­ver­tis­ing and mar­ket­ing.

“Reade Brower, owner of RFB Hold­ings, shares our be­lief in a bright fu­ture for the com­mu­nity news­pa­per busi­ness, one that in­cludes printed prod­ucts as well as ex­cit­ing new prod­ucts and ser­vices made pos­si­ble in our con­tin­u­ally evolv­ing dig­i­tal world,” Costello said.

Sun Me­dia Group owns and op­er­ates 17 pub­li­ca­tions.
