ABB's Kirk on team-up with 3TControl, HKMB
Switzerland-based ABB Printing, 3TControl Precision Systems, a Spanish supplier of density control and print automation systems, and European publisher HKMB have struck a deal making 3TControl the global preferred supplier of press register and ink density control systems to ABB Printing. HKMB operates 10 newspaper printing plants across Germany and Poland. The collaboration has already produced results, with an order placed by Schibsted Media Group’s Bergens Tidende in Bergen, Norway, for full integration of the 3TControl press register and ink density control systems with the ABB press control system. News & Tech publisher Mary L. Van Meter asked Stephen Kirk, ABB's head of marketing for printing, what to expect from the partnership.
News & Tech: How do customers of ABB and 3T benefit from the cooperation?
The measurements from the 3T system can give the ABB control and press management systems very valuable information about the behavior of
the press. For example, as the 3T system measures register deviations for every page, we can build up a picture of inaccuracies in the plate mounting and compensate for this in the positioning of the page image on the plate.
News & Tech: Is the relationship between ABB and 3T exclusive?
No, both companies are free to work with other suppliers, but it is only with the combination of ABB and 3T that all the technical benefits can be achieved.
News & Tech: What attracted ABB and 3T to each other?
At ABB, we are convinced that 3T has the best technical solution for register and ink density control. The fact that newspaper printer HKMB was so impressed with the system that they decided to invest in the company was a very positive sign for ABB. Looking in the other direction, 3T decided that ABB has a financial security that no other supplier has.
