- JOHN MINCHILLO

Columbus, Ohio— Annie Glenn says goodbye to her husband, John, in front of his casket on December 16. Glenn, an acclaimed astronaut and U.S. senator, died December 8 at the age of 95. The Ohio native was a fighter pilot in World War II and the Korean War. In 1962, he became the first American to orbit the Earth, which revived interest in the space program, and he later became the world’s oldest astronaut. In The Right Stuff , Tom Wolfe wrote that Glenn was “the last true national hero America has ever had.”
