In­volve­ment in this West African na­tion was brought to the world’s at­ten­tion fol­low­ing an Isis-claimed Oc­to­ber 2017 am­bush that killed four Green Berets and five of their lo­cal al­lies near the border with Mali. The U.S. mis­sion in Niger was ini­tially autho­rized by Obama in 2013 to as­sist French troops bat­tling Is­lamist mil­i­tants in Mali, but it ex­panded as in­sur­gents linked to Al-qaeda and ISIS be­came in­creas­ingly ac­tive. Es­ti­mated U.S. per­son­nel in Niger now to­tal 800—sec­ond in Africa only to a base in Dji­bouti, where around 2,000 U.S. per­son­nel are de­ployed.
