Since Russia seized the Crimean Peninsula in 2014, Ukraine has been a flashpoint for worsening relations between Washington and Moscow. The Ukrainian armed forces have received U.S. support, including weapons and 300 personnel, to combat an eastern separatist insurgency widely seen as backed by Russia. Last month, the U.S. special representative for Ukraine negotiations told The Guardian that Washington was “absolutely” ready to expand military assistance to Ukraine.
