com After shaking hands with North Penn after Saturday night’s non-league gameI Archbishop Wood peeled off and took a knee around the O0 yard line to listen to what coach Steve Devlin had to say. As he has done DIWHU HvHUy JDPH Ln KLs fiUsW fivH yHDUs wLWK WKH VLNLnJs, the speech was quick and to the point. But the topic of the talk was something he has not had to discuss often.

It was the TOnd game for coach Devlin with Wood and the hnights’ O4-10 win made it the 11th time since O00T he had express discontent in the performance. It was WKH VLNLnJs’ fiUsW ORss sLnFH week one of O011 Eagainst Pittsburgh Central Catholic). If the defending state champs forgot what it felt like to be on the wrong end of the scoreI a scoreless second half gave an antagonizing feeling they have learned to live without.

“Our goal this season was not to beat North PennI” Devlin said. “Our goal is to win a championship. We see where we are and what we need to get better at. eopeIuOOy wH FDn fix LW.”

7KH VLNLnJs GLG nRW HxSHFW to mercy-rule the defending Class 4A state runner-upsI like they have done to their last 14 opponentsI but they did expect to execute and push their winning streak to 1S games. A gosh jessina WRuFKGRwn DnG 1LFN VLsFR fiHOG JRDO wDs WKH sWDUW WKHy were expecting. bverything that followed was not.

“We play these games because we want to play good opponents and get betterI” hnights’ coach Dick Beck said. “We had some kids grow up tonight.”

After holding the hnights to four yards of offense in WKH fiUsW KDOI WKH VLNLnJs kicked off to start the third TuDUWHU DnG .yOH 0DyfiHOG showed what he can with opportunity. After only two FDUULHs Ln WKH fiUsW KDOI, WKH senior running back carried the hnights to O4 unDnswHUHG SRLnWs. 0DyfiHOG rushed for 1P4 yards and had scores of 1O and 40 yards. The forty-yarder came on a fourth-and-one pitch play.

“I knew when we ran Ethe pitch) before they had a lot of guys up the middle and no one on hard containI” Beck said. bven if we did not have a guy block I thought jayfiHOG FRuOG Uun WKHP RvHU or make a guy miss. Credit goes to jike Berstacher who PDGH D nLFH EORFN. 0DyfiHOG was just awesome.”

7KH VLNLnJs KDG WKHLU chances to put the hnights away earlyI but coughed up four fumbles throughout the course of the game. The turnovers set the hnights up wLWK HxFHOOHnW fiHOG SRsLWLRn. In the second quarter it was Steve Gozur’s strip that im-

mediately resulted in points. The senior captain literally ripped the ball out of the Vikings’ hands and bolted 93 yards to the end zone to keep his team within three points (10-7) at halftime.

“Sometimes you have to get lucky, but Steve made that play,” Beck said. “It was a little lucky he was able to take it in for a score, but it was not given to him. That was a huge play. After that our kids started bouncing around a little bit.”

The Vikings only mustered 48 yards of offense in the second half and the Knights’ ground game chewed up the clock. Coach Beck played to the weather and only called three passing plays all game, none of which were completed. The Vikings’ quarterback Chris 5DKLOO wDV 4-IRU-9 DnG finished with 30 passing yards.

“Both teams had to play in the weather,” Devlin said. “We have to get better. If we are going to turn the ball over and miss assignments we are going to be in trouble.” North Penn Archbishop Wood First quarter AW – Josh Messina five yard run (Visco kick) Second quarter AW – Nick Visco 38 yard field goal NP – Steve Gozur 93 yard fumble recovery (Mandes kick) Third quarter NP – Brandon Mandes 27 yard field goal NP – Kyle Mayfield 12 yard run (Mandes kick) Fourth quarter NP – Kyle Mayfield 40 yard run (Mandes kick)
