For five innings Lower Moreland and Christopher Dock were stuck in a classic pitching duel featuring the Lions’ gessica Cugley and the Pioneers’ Lauren Weidler. Dock was eventually able to break through offensively in the sixth inning when they put up three runs. The run support was more than enough for Weidler and the Pioneers as they won 5- 1.

After surrendering an RBI double in the second inning to Lower Moreland leftfielder Bryna Parlow, Weidler went on a tear, recording nine consecutive outs, with the middle seven coming all by strikeout. After Parlow’s double, only two Lions reached base for the rest of the game, catcher Samantha Casey on a walk and centerfielder Kaley Pryzbylinski on an error. As if the pitching stat line were not impressive in itself, Weidler scored a run and played the entire game with an ankle injury.

“She did well,” Christopher Dock coach Wayne Benner said. “She was having some trouble with her ankle. She sprained it a while ago and it’s been tapped up and I think she’s been OK, but she might have done something late in the game today that might have xre] injured it.”

The pitching matchup showed finesse pitching by Cugley as she consistently threw strikes and recorded seven of her outs via a fly ball and another eight on ground balls, and the power pitching by Weidler as she blew fastballs past Lower Moreland hitters all game racking up 12 strikeouts.

For most of the game Cugley got pretty solid defense behind her although the majority of the runs she gave up were late in the game due to a few defensive lapses.
