Wil­liam Ed­ward Sch­wer, Ed. D., 86, of nu­ak­er­town, died Satur­day, May 11, 2013, in his home. He was the hus­band of Mary (Biehn) Sch­wer. With his wife, he is sur­vived by daugh­ters Holly Sch­wer, nu­ak­er­town, and Dr. Sally Can­ning, Oak Park, Ill.; son-in-law Michael Can­ning; grand­daugh­ter Made­line Can­ning; sis­ter Catharine Ann Toth, Mis­souri; nieces and neph­ews.

Wil­liam was born in Jersey Shore, Pa., to the late Jack and Mar­guerite (Crane) Sch­wer. Im­me­di­ately fol­low­ing high school grad­u­a­tion in 1944, he en­listed in the U.S. Navy, serv­ing dur­ing WW II as a sonar man on a de­stroyer es­cort in both the At­lantic DQG 3DFL­fiF WKHDWHUV.

He had a B. S. from Lock Haven Univer­sity, an M. A. from Le­high Univer­sity and a doc­tor­ate in ed­u­ca­tion from Nova South­east­ern Univer­sity.

Sch­wer’s ca­reer as an ed­u­ca­tor be­gan in the nu­ak­er­town schools, first as a sixth- grade teacher and then as as­sis­tant prin­ci­pal of the ju­nior high school. In 1964, he was ap­pointed to be the first prin­ci­pal of Pen­nridge’s then Cen­tral Ju­nior High School. He even­tu­ally moved up into cen­tral ad­min­is­tra­tion as as­sis­tant to the su­per­in­ten­dent of ad­min­is­tra­tion and man­age­ment, re­tir­ing in 1988. He served as pres­i­dent of the Bucks County As­soc. of Sec­ondary Cur­ricu­lum De­vel­op­ment in 197273. A for­mer nu­ak­er­town Bor­ough coun­cil­man, Sch­wer served as pres­i­dent from 1972- 75, dur­ing which time the present Bor­ough Hall was built.

He was a mem­ber of the nu­ak­er­town United Meth- odist Church and the Wal­lace Wil­lard Keller Amer­i­can Le­gion Post 242.

A me­mo­rial ser­vice to cel­e­brate his life was held 11: 30 a. m., Wed­nes­day, May 15, in the nu­ak­er­town United Methodist Church, 1875 Freier Road, nu­ak­er­town. Fam­ily and friends were in­vited to call in the church from 10: 30 to 11: 30 a. m. A fel­low­ship lun­cheon fol­lowed the ser­vice in the church’s Miller Hall.
