Seventh Zika virus case confirmed in Arkansas

-

A seventh case of the mosquito-borne Zika virus has been confirmed in Arkansas, according to the state Department of Health.

The latest case was reported in a patient who had traveled recently to Pacific islands, department spokesman Meg Mirivel said. The patient’s identity was not released.

The first Arkansas case was reported in January.

The Zika virus is spread through mosquitoes and sexual contact, and pregnant women who contract it are the most at risk for complications, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Earlier, the CDC said it would give $1.3 million to help Arkansas fight the virus through efforts such as encouraging participation in the U.S. Zika Pregnancy Registry.
