Event to teach elderly to avoid scams scheduled

- STAFF REPORT

An event for senior citizens will teach them how to avoid scams and identity thefts, how to use Smart911 and how to help emergency officials better protect them.

The Senior Safety Academy is planned for 8:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Thursday at the Prairie Grove United Methodist Church at 1401 E. Park St. in Prairie Grove, according to a news release. The event is free.

A free breakfast and lunch will be provided. The event will include a vendor fair and door prizes.

About 100 people are expected to attend, said Edwin Williams, treasurer for Compassion Fayetteville. The organization is helping promote the event and providing volunteers, Williams said.

Smart911 is a free service letting residents give information to 911 and emergency management officials to use during an emergency, according to information posted on the Fayetteville website.

Thursday’s event is presented by Seniors and Law Enforcement Together, a group of community members and law enforcement officials formed last year to educate and protect elderly people in Washington County.
