100 YEARS AGO July 10, 1917

PRESCOTT — While charg­ing the Grand Jury in Cir­cuit Court here today, Cir­cuit Judge Ge­orge R. Haynie cre­ated a sen­sa­tion when he an­nounced that he had re­ceived in­for­ma­tion from re­li­able sources that close friends of men to be tried at this term of court for mur­der had threat­ened to as­sas­si­nate him and Pros­e­cut­ing At­tor­ney Till­man B. Parks. Judge Haynie an­nounces he is not afraid of those who would put the threat into ex­e­cu­tion, but in­structed the Grand Jury to make a thor­ough in­ves­ti­ga­tion and to in­dict all per­sons in the con­spir­acy.

50 YEARS AGO July 10, 1967

TEXARKANA —Johnny Earnest Smith, 42, of 4504 Wey­mouth Drive, Lit­tle Rock, a driver for the East Texas Mo­tor Freight Com­pany, was killed about two miles east of here Satur­day when his truck veered across a 30-foot wide grass me­dian and crashed into an­other East Texas Mo­tor Freight truck driven by Wil­liam C. O’Rand, 56, also of Lit­tle Rock. O’Rand suf­fered mul­ti­ple frac­tures, burns, and bruises in the fiery crash, which oc­curred about 11:30 p.m. on a straight stretch of In­ter­state 30 near its first junc­tion with U.S. High­way 67.

FORT SMITH — Alan Michael John­son Jr. is free on $50,000 bond af­ter be­ing charged with felony theft of prop­erty in con­nec­tion with $1.43 mil­lion taken from a promi­nent physi­cian his fa­ther con­fessed to mur­der­ing. A pre­lim­i­nary hear­ing has been set for 9 a.m. July 17 in Fort Smith Mu­nic­i­pal Court be­fore Judge Les Evitts, who will de­cide if there is suf­fi­cient ev­i­dence to bind John­son over to Se­bas­tian County Cir­cuit Court.

■ A Grey­hound bus car­ry­ing about 50 pas­sen­gers ran off In­ter­state 40 in Lonoke County and crashed into woods Mon­day evening af­ter a pas­sen­ger grabbed the steer­ing wheel and yanked it, po­lice said. The bus, trav­el­ing from Rich­mond, Va., to Dal­las, was about six miles west of Lonoke when pas­sen­ger Vic­to­ria Combs grabbed the wheel, said Arkansas State Po­lice Cpl. Adrian Ray. The bus went off the road about 30 yards, crash­ing into trees along­side the high­way. Combs and 10 other pas­sen­gers were taken to area hos­pi­tals for in­juries rang­ing from bone frac­tures to bumps and bruises, Ray said.
