Arkansan’s body re­cov­ered in river

The body of a Polk County man who was last seen July 12 was found Satur­day night on the other side of the state in Chicot County.

A news re­lease from the Polk County sher­iff’s of­fice said the body was that of Kevin Bird­well, 51, for­merly of Springhill, La.

The sher­iff’s of­fice, U.S. For­est Ser­vice and others searched Bird­well’s prop­erty and the sur­round­ing Oua­chita Na­tional For­est land af­ter Bird­well was re­ported miss­ing Fri­day, the re­lease said.

Chicot County Sher­iff Ronald Ni­chols said a fish­er­man found Bird­well’s body about 7:30 p.m. Satur­day in the Mis­sis­sippi River south­east of Eu­dora.

Ni­chols said he couldn’t tell how Bird­well died. The body has been sent to the state Crime Lab­o­ra­tory in Lit­tle Rock for au­topsy.

Polk County and Chicot County sher­iff’s of­fices and the Arkansas State Po­lice are par­tic­i­pat­ing in a joint in­ves­ti­ga­tion, ac­cord­ing to a state­ment from the Polk County sher­iff’s of­fice.
