100 YEARS AGO July 21, 1917

■ The first of two men in Little Rock drawn yesterday for the draft will not claim exemption and both say they are willing to “do their bit.” One is Roy Senyard, 315 West Twentieth street, and the other is Carl F. Duerr, 1008 Ringo street, Senyard is in the Western District and Duerr is in the Eastern District. Their serial number was 258. “I consider myself a lucky man and feel highly honored that my number was drawn first,” Mr. Senyard said. “I am perfectly willing to ‘do my bit,’” Mr. Duerr said last night.

50 YEARS AGO July 21, 1967

■ Winston Crockett Talley, 28, of 701 West Thirty-third Street, North Little Rock, a former convict at Tucker Prison Farm whose legal action led to changes in the rules on the use of the strap to discipline prisoners in the State Penitentia­ry, was arrested again early Thursday. Talley and Thomas Carroll McGill, 20, of 309 East Seventh Street, North little Rock, were arrested at 12:04 a.m. at Wakefield Village Esso Servicente­r at 4525 West Sixty-fifth Street after the service station was burglarize­d, the police said.

ARKANSAS CITY — A police officer’s wife disrupted jury selection Monday in a murder and kidnapping trial in Desha County Circuit Court when she told other potential jurors that her husband had arrested the defendant several times. Bennie Lamar Cleveland, 27, of McGehee is charged with capital murder, kidnapping, attempted murder, and theft of property in a December 1992 incident at Cash’s Quik Check convenienc­e store. Cleveland is accused of fatally shooting clerk Michelle Nagel, 23, and kidnapping his former girlfriend, Paula Easter, 32, both of McGehee.

WEST MEMPHIS — A circuit court judge has appointed two special prosecutor­s to review an Arkansas State Police investigat­ion into the June 22 fatal police shooting of a 12-year-old West Memphis boy. Judge David Burnett of Osceola appointed H.G. Foster of Conway as special prosecutor and John “Jack” McQuary of Benton as special deputy prosecutor after 2nd Judicial District Prosecutin­g Attorney Brent Davis asked to be recused from the case. The state police had yet to conclude its investigat­ion Friday.
