Pro­posal No. 9

The pro­posal, which will be voted on Mon­day dur­ing the Arkansas Ac­tiv­i­ties As­so­ci­a­tion’s an­nual meet­ing of the gov­ern­ing body in Lit­tle Rock, will cause clas­si­fi­ca­tion changes in ev­ery sport but foot­ball. Those changes, ef­fec­tive at the start of the 2018-19 school year, are as fol­lows:

Bas­ket­ball, base­ball, soft­ball, golf and track and field

There will be six classes, with Class 6A con­sist­ing of the state’s 16 largest schools. Class 5A will have the next 32 largest schools, fol­lowed by Class 4A with the next 48 schools. The re­main­ing schools will be di­vided by three and placed in Class 3A through 1A, with any schools left over go­ing to Class 1A.

Wrestling and swim­ming

Class 6A and 5A will have the same schools, but schools in Class 4A and be­low will com­pete in the same state tour­na­ment.

Cross coun­try and ten­nis

Class 1A and 2A schools will com­pete in the same state championship. The re­main­ing classes will re­main the same.

Vol­ley­ball, soc­cer and bowl­ing

Class 6A, Class 5A and Class 4A re­main the same. Schools in Class 3A and be­low will be grouped to­gether and com­pete for the same state championship.
