100 YEARS AGO July 28, 1917

■ James Voinche, aged about 20, a member of the Company 1, First Arkansas Infantry, died shortly after 11 o’clock last night at the City hospital from injuries received about 10 o’clock at Markham street and Broadway, when he was stuck by a Union depot car after he had climbed under the guard rail on the inside of a Pulaski Heights summer car to go to the rear of the car to join a friend. Voinche was sitting near the left side of the car coming from Pulaski Heights. He climbed under the guard rail just as the cars were passing and was struck by the Union depot car and was thrown between the tracks.

50 YEARS AGO July 28, 1967

■ A small fire broke out in the main electric circuit panel in the basement of City Hall at 10: 30 a. m. Thursday, heavily damaging the panel and virtually closing the building for the rest of the day. Four trucks of firemen quickly put out the blaze but the building was left without power for the day. The windows of the building on the east and south sides have been bricked and the lack of power put most of the building in darkness.

25 YEARS AGO July 28, 1992

■ The FBI said Monday it is investigating an allegation that a member of a Dallas-based firm misrepresented himself as an FBI agent after he was hired by a group opposing a petition drive to put a cigarette tax on the November ballot. Don Whitehead, an FBI spokesman, said the allegation came to the office “second- hand.” “We did have a complaint that someone identified themselves as an FBI agent. We received this information last Thursday. We believe the man was employed by a Dallas firm.”

FORDYCE — A former Fordyce police chief has been charged with capital murder in the shooting death of his wife, with whom he taught Sunday School in this south Arkansas city of 4,344 residents. Paul Douglas Gill, 54, is accused of killing Sandra Kaye Gill, 55, on March 22 at their Fordyce home and then trying to make it look like a suicide, according to a probable-cause affidavit signed by police. He appeared in Dallas County District Court on Friday morning in an orange inmate jumpsuit, handcuffed and shackled. As he entered the courtroom, family members and friends embraced him.
