100 YEARS AGO Aug. 6, 1917

TEXARKANA — Buron Free­man, 35 years old, a farmer liv­ing on Red river, 15 miles north­west of here, was called to the door of his home about 9 o’clock last night and was shot dead by some un­known per­son. Two charges of buck­shot, fired at close range, struck him in the chest, mak­ing a ghastly wound. Mrs. Free­man, wife of the dead man, was brought here to­day and placed in jail, charged with be­ing im­pli­cated in the killing. A posse is search­ing for a man who is sus­pected of do­ing the shoot­ing. Mrs. Free­man re­fuses to talk.

25 YEARS AGO Aug. 6, 1992

■ A Lit­tle Rock man was beaten to death with a board late Tues­day as he and an ac­com­plice al­legedly forced their way into a down­town apart­ment seek­ing beer and cig­a­rettes. The vic­tim was iden­ti­fied as Calvin Willis, 38, of 1322 S. Rock St. Lit­tle Rock po­lice spokesman Lt. Charles Hol­la­day said Willis was killed by Lon­nie Woody, 36, of Wooster (Faulkner County). Hol­la­day said Woody was ques­tioned by po­lice and re­leased with­out be­ing charged. The Pu­laski County pros­e­cut­ing at­tor­ney’s of­fice will re­view the case and make a fi­nal de­ci­sion on whether charges will be filed, Hol­la­day said.

■ A man was killed and an­other was crit­i­cally in­jured in what po­lice de­scribed as a shootout in a res­i­den­tial street in south­west Lit­tle Rock. The shoot­ing, which hap­pened at 7:42 p.m., fol­lowed an ar­gu­ment be­tween the two men at Mer­rivale and Wood­ford drives, Lit­tle Rock po­lice Lt. Terry Hast­ings said. The men drew guns and fired at each other, Hast­ings said. One ran to his house at 9425 Wood­ford Drive and col­lapsed in the drive­way, where he was found dead. The other man ran to a house in the 9200 block of Mer­rivale and col­lapsed on the porch, sur­pris­ing its oc­cu­pants, who don’t know the man, Hast­ings said.
