Rogers Council approves new names for roads
ROGERS — The City Council approved renaming two roads on Tuesday.
Southgate and Haxton roads were renamed to Pleasant Grove Road. The name change only impacts the portions of the roads in the city.
Rogers Fire Chief Tom Jenkins said it makes sense to rename the Southgate and Haxton roads now that the Pleasant Grove connectivity is a reality. Jenkins said they could delay renaming the roads for months or a year, but it will be necessary when the three roads connect.
Jenkins said there could be dual names on signs, so Haxton Road could appear with Pleasant Grove Road on some signs. Jenkins said there are similar signs in the city.
Rogers Police Chief Hayes Minor was in favor of renaming the roads. Minor said it’s a public safety issue. Minor said it will be easier for first-responders to handle calls from one road with the same name instead of handling calls with three names.
Minor said he and Jenkins sent 40 letters to people impacted about renaming the roads and received two responses.
Jon Simpson told the council he and his two neighbors are the only homes on the short portion of Haxton Road within Rogers’ city limits. Simpson was against renaming Haxton Road and said his neighbors also were against the name change.
Simpson, who is Bentonville’s police chief, said he lives in Rogers, but has a Bentonville mailing address. The name change also may cause some confusion because of his mailing address, Simpson said.
Simpson believes name changes should be delayed until all of Pleasant Grove Road connects with Haxton and Southgate roads.
Councilman Jerry Carmichael said in the committee meeting it makes sense to rename the roads now instead of waiting.
The Public Safety Committee recommended renaming the two roads.
The council voted 9-0 in favor of renaming the roads.
The city council voted to accept a federal grant for construction of a taxilane-apron at the Rogers Executive Airport.
