Al McCarty Jewelers are experts at repair
Al McCarty Jewelers, in Rogers, has been in business 102 years and originally started as a watch repair shop in Helena in 1915 by Al McCarty’s grandfather, who passed it down to his father, who in turn passed it down to Al, who opened his first jewelry store in 1971, in Helena. In 1979, the store moved to Rogers by virtue of a recommendation from a jewelry salesman, and it has been in Northwest Arkansas ever since. A.V. McCarty IV now runs the store, along with his mother, Carolyn, and is the fourth generation to run the family jewelry business. “Now, we focus mainly on repairing of jewelry and customizing and mounts,” McCarty said. “That’s what we’ve transitioned into here in Rogers, and it’s our bread and butter.” Originally, the store was in downtown Rogers, but moved to the current location on Walnut Street in the late 1980s. McCarty has the tools and resources to fix almost any type of jewelry imaginable, and does everything on the premises. “I’ve got to see it first, but I can fix almost anything,” McCarty added. “I’ve now got a laser welder that can help me fix costume jewelry that I used to not be able to fix. I can also do eyeglasses now. If you bring in all your old jewelry, we’ll put it in something new. We’ll find a ring or pendant or earrings and put your stones into it.” The only thing that is sent off and not worked on by McCarty in the store are watches, but they are sent to a local resident who lives on Beaver Lake and works on them. “We got started in this business doing watches, and now we really only deal with batteries, bands, and links nowadays,” noted McCarty. On Friday, Nov. 10, Al McCarty Jewelers will have a remount event all day where people can bring their old stones or wedding sets, look at the salesman jewelry line from Rego, and decide if they’d like to put their items in something new. “A lot of times, people have old stones or wedding sets that they like, but don’t like what the stone is set in,” stated McCarty. “This allows customers to actually look at the jewelry in person instead of looking at a catalog or website.” Al McCarty Jewelers will also have specials running that day with color stone jewelry being 20 percent off and diamond cross pendants being 30 percent off. This is a great way to get ideas for Christmas presents with the holidays just around the corner. In addition to this scheduled sale, there will also be an Estate Jewelry show all day on Friday, Dec. 1. “We have a salesman that has a lot of unique old antique jewelry, rings, pendants, and a nice selection of cameos — most being very old and unique,” added McCarty. “If anyone likes old antique jewelry, this would be a good time to get something for Christmas.” Al McCarty Jewelers is located at 1041 W. Walnut, in Rogers, and they are open from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m.-1 p.m., on Saturday.
