A FRESH START
AS THEY GET READY TO WELCOME THEIR FIRST CHILD, THE DUKE AND DUCHESS OF SUSSEX ARE PLANNING TO TURN THEIR BACKS ON THE MONARCHY, SOURCES SAY
Now that they’re expecting a baby, Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan are ready to leave the royal family — and the U.K. — behind for a life in America, sources say.
From mingling with locals to fancy state dinners, Duchess Meghan and Prince Harry appeared to be having the time of their lives as they carried out their 16-day royal tour of Australia, Fiji, Tonga and New Zealand. “Everyone was so warm and welcoming to them,” a source says of the parents-to-be, who reportedly snuck in a bit of private time, enjoying a romantic night together on a private Fijian island. “They both really enjoyed themselves.” But things are about to get a lot more hectic. “There has been talk that once the tour ends, Harry and Meghan will be making a historic announcement that will rock the palace to its core. They’ll be revealing that they’re leaving the royal life behind,” an insider tells OK!, adding that there are whispers that Harry will be giving up his title and his $150 million trust fund. “His priorities have shifted now that he has a baby on the way. Meghan and their children come first now. As much as he enjoys his royal duties, if getting out of the monarchy is the best thing for his family, that’s what he’s going to do.”
HEADING ACROSS THE POND
After the announcement is made, Harry, 34, and Meghan, 37 — whose little one will reportedly arrive this spring — will be making a big move. “There’s buzz that they are planning to relocate to America,” spills the insider. “Meghan grew up in California and thinks it would be the perfect place to raise a family. Harry would do anything for her, so he’s agreed.” But the couple’s plan is sure to ruffle some royal feathers. “Harry knows that his grandmother [Queen Elizabeth II] will be the most upset when she finds out,” says the insider, pointing out that his decision is very similar to the one made by the queen’s uncle, King Edward VIII, who famously abdicated the throne in 1936 to be with American socialite Wallis Simpson. “That brought a lot of embarrassment to the monarchy. She likely doesn’t want her family to go through that again.” Attention is one of the very things Harry is running away from. “Harry has experienced all the negatives that come with being part of ‘The Firm,’” explains the insider, referring to the 1997 death of his mom, Princess Diana, who was killed in a car crash while being chased by paparazzi. “His mother’s death still haunts him, and he’s vowed to never let Meghan or his child suffer the same fate as Diana,” adds the insider. “He’ll do anything to protect his family – even if that means leaving the palace for good.” OK!
“From looking at his mother’s life, Harry knows the pressures that come with the royal spotlight,” says a source.
