Meier, Braun among UM inductees

- Christy Cabrera Chirinos

Miami women’s basketball coach Katie Meier would be the first to say she still has work to continue doing at Miami. But now she’ll be doing it with the distinction of being a Hall of Famer.

Meier, who started in 2005 and has led the Hurricanes to seven consecutive postseason berths and six NCAA Tournament appearances in seven years, will be among the nine members inducted into the UM Sports Hall of Fame.

“I’m just so honored and humbled by the invitation,” Meier via text message Monday. “The U has so many great Hall of Famers — it is truly select company. I honestly can’t believe it.” She will be joined in the class by: former UM tight end

Jeremy Shockey (2000-2001), who led the 2001 nationalchampionship team with 45 catches for 604 yards; former baseball star Ryan Braun (2003-05), who is currently with the Milwaukee Brewers; and former tennis standout Audra

Cohen (2005-07), who won the 2007 NCAA women’s singles title. The list of nine honorees also include football players James Jackson (1996-2000) and Darryl Williams, baseball

player Dan Davies (1983-86), basketball player Steve Edwards (1992-96) and Valeria Tipiana (2000-04), who will be the first volleyball player inducted into the school’s hall of fame. The group will be introduced during the Hurricanes’ Oct. 15 football game against North Carolina and inducted into the hall in April. Next football game: No. 14 UM at Georgia Tech, noon Saturday, ESPN2
