Race-car driver Danica Patrick is as ded­i­cated in the gym as she is on the track.

like Danica Patrick are not only skilled be­hind the wheel, but they’re also se­ri­ous ath­letes. Al­though race-car driv­ers lit­er­ally sit down on the job while they speed around the track, they must be fit, par­tic­u­larly in longer and faster races. “Driv­ing a race car re­quires a lot of up­per-body strength,” says NASCAR driver Danica Patrick. Plus, en­durance train­ing is a must.

As a re­sult, Patrick goes at it as hard in the gym as she does on the track, pre­fer­ring to do in­ter­val train­ing to get the most bang for her fit­ness buck. “Back in the day, I would train more up­per body be­cause that’s what my job re­quired of me, but I do so much train­ing now that I spread it all out,” she says. “I have de­vel­oped my up­per body in such a way that I can do many other things and still have plenty of strength to drive the car.”

Al­though she’s ex­tremely mo­ti­vated to work out on her own, “I do like to work out with peo­ple that push as hard as I push and that can push me,” she says. “I also en­joy work­ing out with peo­ple who’ve never worked out like I work out be­fore so I can show them how fun it can be. But I have the most fun when I work out with some­one who’s bet­ter than me so I can take it to the next level.”

Patrick, 35, who is spon­sored by Purely In­spired, is ded­i­cated to main­tain­ing a healthy life­style, no mat­ter how hec­tic her sched­ule gets. “It’s all about prepa­ra­tion, but I also have a good team around me that makes sure I have food,” she says. “If you don’t have that help, then it’s about prepa­ra­tion. When you turn the oven on, go ahead and do three rounds of roast­ing so you have food made ahead of time for the week. My other tip is to bring a cooler with you so you can keep your food handy.”

And even though she doesn’t cop out to in­dulging in cheat meals of­ten, “I will say I like wine and I also re­ally love desserts. I’m re­ally par­tic­u­lar about desserts be­cause I do eat fairly clean when it comes to gluten and dairy, and that’s hard to find un­less you’re at an uber­healthy res­tau­rant. For me, it’s prob­a­bly wine and then eat­ing sweet ver­sus sa­vory.”
