Race-car driver Danica Patrick is as dedicated in the gym as she is on the track.

Professional racer-car drivers

like Danica Patrick are not only skilled behind the wheel, but they’re also serious athletes. Although race-car drivers literally sit down on the job while they speed around the track, they must be fit, particularly in longer and faster races. “Driving a race car requires a lot of upper-body strength,” says NASCAR driver Danica Patrick. Plus, endurance training is a must.

As a result, Patrick goes at it as hard in the gym as she does on the track, preferring to do interval training to get the most bang for her fitness buck. “Back in the day, I would train more upper body because that’s what my job required of me, but I do so much training now that I spread it all out,” she says. “I have developed my upper body in such a way that I can do many other things and still have plenty of strength to drive the car.”

Although she’s extremely motivated to work out on her own, “I do like to work out with people that push as hard as I push and that can push me,” she says. “I also enjoy working out with people who’ve never worked out like I work out before so I can show them how fun it can be. But I have the most fun when I work out with someone who’s better than me so I can take it to the next level.”

Patrick, 35, who is sponsored by Purely Inspired, is dedicated to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, no matter how hectic her schedule gets. “It’s all about preparation, but I also have a good team around me that makes sure I have food,” she says. “If you don’t have that help, then it’s about preparation. When you turn the oven on, go ahead and do three rounds of roasting so you have food made ahead of time for the week. My other tip is to bring a cooler with you so you can keep your food handy.”

And even though she doesn’t cop out to indulging in cheat meals often, “I will say I like wine and I also really love desserts. I’m really particular about desserts because I do eat fairly clean when it comes to gluten and dairy, and that’s hard to find unless you’re at an uberhealthy restaurant. For me, it’s probably wine and then eating sweet versus savory.”
