INSIDE LINEBACKER (9)
Packers head coach Mike McCarthy plans on moving Clay Matthews back to outside linebacker. For that strategy to work, though, McCarthy needs another inside linebacker, or two.
Jake Ryan remains unproven at the position. And Sam Barrington suffered a foot injury in Week 1 last year that required season-ending surgery.
Thompson would likely have to trade up to land Alabama’s Reggie Ragland, who’s widely considered the top inside linebacker available. Ragland is a do-it-all linebacker with great physicality and was the SEC’s defensive player of the year in 2015. He would give Green Bay’s defense a nastiness it needs.
If Ragland is gone, Missouri’s Kentrell Brothers or Oklahoma’s Dominique Alexander could appeal to Thompson in Round 2. Either way, McCarthy needs reinforcements if he’s going to move Matthews.
