Talent lacking in key spots

Packer Plus - - News - Ryan Wood Columnist USA TODAY NETWORK – WIS.

Packers beat writer Ryan Wood answered questions from readers Monday, a day after Green Bay’s 31-23 loss to the Detroit Lions at Ford Field. Read the transcript at jsonline.com/packers.

Q: Ryan, this is a talented team, and yet each game we find a new way to underachieve, where do we point the finger?

A: I’m not sure we can say this is a talented team. A talented quarterback, yes. But where’s everything else? The Packers have no edge rush, their cornerbacks are greener than their home jerseys, and so are their receivers. Lots of holes on the roster, too. I’m not sure that’s Brian Gutekunst’s fault, either. He was left with a lot of upgrades to make.

Q: Any obvious reason for the missed kicks? The snap? The hold? Or just plain bad kicks?

A: Sure looked like it was just bad kicks. On replays, thought the operation looked fine. Mason Crosby said as much yesterday. Just a kicker who couldn’t split the uprights. Such a bizarre thing to see, especially considering it was indoors.

Q: So any revised predictions on the Packers final W/L record this year?

A: I mean, they’re in a lot of trouble. The Packers needed to rack up wins in September and October. That didn’t happen. I think November is going to be messy. They might benefit from playing in a suspect NFC North, but it’s very plausible at this point they could miss the playoffs. At the very least, they have to play significantly better.

Q: Do you consider yourself a Journalist or Entertainer?

A: Journalist. The two pillars of such are to inform and entertain.
