A fishing trip took a strange turn for a 12-year-old West Palm Beach girl when she reeled in a handgun from the Intracoastal Waterway.

A police report said officers were summoned to Bingham Island, 50 Southern Blvd., at 11:48 a.m. Sunday in reference to found property.

The girl and her grandfather had been fishing on the south- east side of the Southern Boulevard Bridge when the girl told him she had something on her fishing line.

Instead of a fish, she caught a black 9mm Smith & Wesson handgun in a cloth holster, according to the report.

Her grandfather touched the gun to take it off the line, though no one else handled the gun until officers arrived,
